The Complication of Belly’s Love Life
This new season of The Summer I Turned Pretty has been a rollercoaster. The season started off with Belly and Jeremiah being together. They were thriving until Belly found out Jeremiah cheated on her. Though, Jeremiah claims he technically didn’t cheat on her because they were “broken up” (for about 3 seconds). All of that happened in just the first episode! A couple episodes later, Jeremiah proposes to Belly right after her older brother, Steven, is hospitalized after being in a traumatic car accident. Nobody really supports their engagement at first and thinks they’re rushing into marriage. Jeremiah gets a job with his dad to help pay for the wedding since they have no help. His dad later offers to pay for the wedding and has his secretary, Kayleigh (AKA his mistress), plan it.
Conrad later finds out Jeremiah cheated and tells Belly. To his surprise, she already knows. He then confesses to Belly that he still loves her and feels like he always will. Conrad also tells her “don’t marry him, be with me,” but Belly still decides to marry Jeremiah. The night before the wedding, Belly tells Jeremiah what Conrad told her. Jeremiah then goes missing the day of the wedding and no one knew where he was. Conrad goes to find him and, when he finally does, he tells him to go to the wedding and to not make Belly wait. Jeremiah shows up to the wedding, finally, and talks to Belly and asks her if she still loves Conrad. She reveals that part of her will always love him. Jeremiah also reveals he knew she was in Cousins with Conrad during Christmas, and it was the reason he started that argument when he was leaving for Cabo before they “broke up.”
After the truth unfolds, the wedding is called off and Belly goes to the airport, where she sees Conrad. She doesn’t actually end up talking to him or anything, and Conrad doesn’t notice she’s there. After she gets on the flight, Conrad gets a call where he finds out that the wedding was called off (he didn’t know because Jeremiah uninvited him the night before the wedding). He then chooses to miss his flight to California to help his little brother, Jeremiah. Clearly Jeremiah didn’t want his help. Nobody knows where Belly ran off to, but little do they know she went to Paris for her study-abroad program.
Belly later finds out her spot in the program was taken. Belly calls her mom Laurel and tells her what’s going on and her mom tells her to go back home. Belly doesn’t really want to and thinks everyone currently hates her. Meanwhile, Jeremiah is waiting for her to return to him and claims Belly is his “whole life” and he “doesn’t know what he would do without her.” Back in Paris, Belly loses her backpack with her engagement ring in it and is searching for it; she finds it at a club. While at the club, she meets new friends. She later explains to her new friends what had occurred in the last 36 hours. Her new friends try to convince her to stay in Paris.
Back at home, Steven finds out Jeremiah cheated on Belly. Steven mutually agrees to rekindle his relationship with Taylor. Belly calls Jeremiah and tells him she’s in Paris. Jeremiah tells Belly to come home so they can go back to how they were. Belly tells him that it isn’t going to be possible and that she doesn’t even know who she is anymore. Belly then tells Jeremiah she is going to stay in Paris to try and find herself. Jeremiah gets upset and tells Belly not to call him anymore. Jeremiah then reveals to Conrad that Belly’s in Paris and tells him to go back to California.
Belly sees Paris as a way to find herself and to start over. She said “Rebuilding is always possible.” Maybe this is what Belly needed to clear her mind and stay away from the Fisher boys.
Steven and Taylor’s Relationship Unfolds This Season
When Season 3 started, we saw Steven and Taylor were broken up and were in their own relationships. However, they were still casually seeing each other. Steven then broke up with his girlfriend because he wanted to be with Taylor. Taylor tells Steven she was hoping that wouldn’t happen and that they could never be together; it would never work. While having this conversation during a car ride, things gets heated and Taylor gets out of the car. While she gets out and walks away, Steven attempts to turn the car around before he gets in a terrible crash. Steven ends up being in a coma. Taylor then realizes she doesn’t wanna waste her time and wants to be with Steven. Steven then wakes up from his coma and realizes the opposite; he doesn’t feel like he should waste his time trying to get back with Taylor. They stay friends. Taylor even becomes Steven wingwoman and helps Denise (Steven’s co-worker) ask Steven out. Though, Steven and Denise later find out there are no sparks between them. Steven then realizes he still wants to be with Taylor. After the wedding got canceled, they communicated and got back together, willing to take the risk of it not working out.
My Personal Opinion of the New Season So Far:
I’m personally on Team Conrad. Seeing Belly and Jeremiah on my screen makes me want to throw up. Jeremiah and Belly got too much screen time this season. I’m glad she came to her senses and decided to not marry him. I don’t think Jeremiah deserves Belly, but at the same time, Belly and Conrad aren’t exactly the perfect couple either. But when they were together, we had to keep in mind that Conrad was going through a lot with his mom slowly dying. This season we saw how Conrad started going to therapy. I believe he changed for the better now. Conrad and Belly can run off into the sunset together (literally what Conrad says he wishes he could do with her) and live happily ever after.
I think it’s good that Taylor and Steven smoothed out their rough patches between them. This season was complicated for them, but towards the end they cleared up some things and decided they still love each other enough to get back together. They were willing to take the risk of it possibly not working out.
I also think Paris is going to be a good beginning for Belly. She can focus on herself, maybe even focus on other relationships that don’t involve the Fisher boys. I can’t wait to see what Paris has in store for Belly. With only 2 more episodes to come of this final season, we will see what Belly ends up doing and if she ever picks to be with Conrad again.
