As a person who has been obsessed with The Conjuring franchise since I was a kid, I was overly excited for the new movie to come out, also, because it was the last one they were going to release. I can admit, I had extremely high expectations for this movie. Despite this, they exceeded them tremendously. It had just the right amount of jump scares, laughs, and aw’s which allowed the movie to be frightening and suspenseful but also have a happy ending.
The movie starts off with main characters Ed and Lorraine Warren doing their normal lectures about spirits and the paranormal at a school. However, this time, the majority of seats were empty, and those who were actually there were only joking around and not taking it seriously since Ed and Lorraine haven’t taken cases in years and just teach. Soon after, Ed, Lorraine, and their daughter, Judy, are at dinner talking about Ed’s heart problems and it being the reason for them no longer taking cases. A little after that conversation, Lorraine’s senses kick in and she becomes concerned since she sees Judy stressed trying to calm herself down from the constant spirits she sees. While doing so, Lorraine is frightened by the sight of a spirit’s grey and dirty hand going down Judy’s shoulder. This shows the beginning of the paranormal trying to get closer to Judy and that something is going to happen.
As we get deeper into the movie more paranormal things begin happening all around the Warrens. One being the father/pastor going to help a family in need but is instead greeted and possessed by a demon to kill himself. A second being Judy getting choked by her own reflection in her fitting room as she tries on wedding dresses. Another instance is when Lorraine is washing dishes and finds the locket necklace of her and Judy in the garbage disposal and the sink begins to overflow with blood giving her a sign that something wrong is going to happen to Judy. Right after, she finds out Judy has flown to Pennsylvania to the last place the father was before he died to figure out why he died and to help this family in need. The Warrens then decide to stay and help the family but then discover the family is being haunted by a powerful demon attached to a mirror. They then explained that the demon was one they encountered the first time they ever took a case and actually ran away from this demon because they almost lost their daughter to it.
The night comes and the family and the Warrens just continue to see the spirit. Whether it’s in the form of this creepy grinning elderly woman or an extremely tall grinning man with an ax. Both continuously haunt and harm the family. But, the part where everything goes extremely south is when the spirit actually possesses Judy and gets extremely close to getting her soul and even almost kills her fiance with the mirror. Fortunately, Lorraine realizes with both her strength and Judy’s they can defeat the demon together, as a family. In the end, they do indeed end up defeating the demon, the fiancee didn’t die and they had their beautiful wedding. This was my favorite part because the families from the first two ‘Conjuring’ attended the wedding making it a cute little reunion.
So, if I were to rate this amazing movie out of 10, I would give it an 11. This movie had me screaming, laughing, and crying all at the same time. I rarely cry at movies, since everything is mostly fake, but knowing that this was based on a true story made it 10 times better. I recommend everyone watch it and see how powerful Ed and Lorraine’s love, care, and strength saves them again.
