A big genre of games that has emerged over time is called “indie games.” These games are different from the mainstream line of “AAA” games which are funded by massive companies and publishers. Instead, indie games are developed by small development teams or even teams of just one individual. Throughout the years, indie games have developed a whole culture that continues to blow expectations. For those of you who are looking for a new style of game to play, here are three recommendations.
Stardew Valley (PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch, iOS, Android)
Stardew Valley is by far one of the most relaxing indie games that has been released. In summary, it is a game in which you run a farm, making profit through various types of crops throughout each season. The game has tons of content, allowing you to interact with the inhabitants of Stardew Valley, mine for gems, participate in festivals, and much more. The game was released in 2016, and is currently sitting at a price of $15.
Celeste (PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch)
Having been nominated for Game of the Year 2018, Celeste is an absolute masterpiece of a game. It introduced a new style of platforming that is actually quite difficult. Apart from gameplay, Celeste has both a beautiful soundtrack and a beautiful overall theme and message, as it explores the mental health of the main character, Madeline, and how she overcomes her inner demons. The game was released in 2018, and is currently sitting at a price of $20.
Cuphead (PC, Xbox, Switch)
Cuphead is one of the most notable indie games of recent times, as it features a unique art style that mimics old cartoons. It became a trend due to its high difficulty, as it is the type of game that intends to make players try and try again at defeating bosses and platforming stages. Like Celeste, Cuphead has an amazing soundtrack that utilizes the cartoony style perfectly. The game was released in 2017, and is currently sitting at a price of $20. The developer is also planning on releasing extra content for the game this year.
