The Importance of Feminism

Santiago Rivera, Staff Writer

There’s a notion surrounding feminism that feminists are hipster white women who shove their opinions down the throats of society, but that’s not true. The equity and empowerment of women always outweighs the outdated ideas that women are inferior and should be submissive.

Feminists come in many different forms. Back in August, President Obama wrote, in an open essay to Glamour, about his experience with feminism. He declared, “This is what a feminist looks like.”  This declaration from president Obama creates a space for young men and others to reevaluate their role in this misogynistic society that we live in.

Many people fail to realize the importance of feminism. True feminism creates intersectionality between all social, economic, and political issues. Feminism provides for the compassion and involvement of many into different issues; from LGBTQ rights to the treatment of people of color.

Not only is the feminist movement the driving force in a society of acceptance with the base issue of women’s empowerment, but it’s also providing a platform for those who love who they love, identify differently, and have different colored skin.

Ultimately, feminism is the empowerment of women. They deserve that right, and so much more. As a society it should be our responsibility to treat women with respect and make sure that women of color and all women earn the same amount of money as white men, and that women get the right to control their bodies.

“Feminism exists because since the beginning of time men have ruled everything,” said Senior Lauren Martinez. “Feminists want equality in this man ruled world. Everyone is equal and they should be treated as such, every gender is equal and it’s time we act like it.”

Male cis-gendered privilege goes a long away in this society. Let’s create opportunities for the oppressed and accept our eclectic planet.
