Our Community Our Responsibility is a community service project that my youth group, The Archonettes, is working on. We submitted a grant proposal to the City of West Palm Beach and successfully got it. My mission as vice president of my youth group is to help kids learn how and why it’s important to be environmental stewards.
What To Know
We have been going to parks that are operated by the City of West Palm Beach and picking up trash on playgrounds, courts, in lakes, etc. We call these cleanups and cool downs. The cool down factor is ice cream, which is the treat served after the cleanups have finished.
The second part of our project is going to Program REACH and resuscitating 6 Gardens. Program REACH is Palm Beach County’s largest homeless shelter. We plan to put flowers, vegetables, and fruits in these gardens. We get the kids living there involved to work on the garden in sessions. Our very first session was last weekend. We primed the bricks that surround each garden and pulled out weeds. It’s important for these kids to know that they can beautify their environment and make it useful to them.
Why
Community service is so important not just for students but for everyone. Community service builds skills and personal development. It is so important for not only kids, but adults as well, to know that they can easily make a difference right in their backyard.
Everyone is free to join us; in return, you’ll get plenty of community service hours and have a good time!
