Shawn Mendes got his start to fame in 2013 by posting 6-second video clips on Vine, soon becoming one of the most followed users on the social media platform. After being discovered and signed to a record label, Mendes soon shot to the tops of the music charts, and has now released his second album, “Illuminate,” which is his second number one on the Billboard 200; and he’s only eighteen years old.

This album mainly captures the theme of love and heartbreak, and somehow is able to tell a story while doing so. With 12 songs on the record (15 on the deluxe edition), Shawn Mendes surely blew me out the park once again with this album.

Here are a few songs from the record that are my favorites:

“Honest” – This song revolves around not feeling good enough for the one you love, Not only do I relate to the lyrics, but I also love the music and the beat behind it.

“Is that I hate to hurt you but I got to be honest
I can’t give you what you need
Oh, you deserve more than I can promise”

“Treat You Better” – When I listen to this song, I am reminded of my best friends and how we would sing along to this song in the car. This song is one of the more upbeat songs on the album, and talks about the theme of being able to treat someone better than how they’ve been treated.

“I know I can treat you better than he can
And any girl like you deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crying”

“Patience” – This song reminds me of a moment in my life when a guy couldn’t make up his mind about what he wanted, so instantly I related to the song. It’s another upbeat song with a fast pace.

“First you say you love me then you say you don’t
I wake up in the morning and I’m all alone
Tell me that you’re willing then you say you won’t
Can you make your mind up, please, I’m losing my patience”
