Earlier this month, The Weeknd held a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he performed many new songs from his upcoming album “Hurry Up Tomorrow.” Amongst these was one notable song that has been taking the internet by storm, “TIMELESS” by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti. Once again, both artists come together to drop a banger since their first song together was called “Popular.” After TIMELESS official release on September 27th, it has been announced that it is The Weeknd and Playboi Carti’s biggest Spotify debut, garnering over 10 million views in a single day, and has been marked as the 9th most streamed rap song in a single day ever!
Review
Personally, the song was 50/50 for me. The first half was really good, and the second half was kind of hard to listen to. The song started off with Carti’s verses for the first half of the song; during this, Carti was switching through his iconic sounds from the past, such as the “WLR” or “Cash Carti” voice. This made the song so fun and enjoyable; as a longtime Carti fan, we get hit with nostalgia; he really nailed it. But on the other end, in the second half, The Weeknd comes through. One thing that made it hard to listen to was when The Weeknd was repeating some of Carti’s lines, such as “Ever since I was a jit, I have been legit.” I just think it sounded very out of place, like it was not meant for someone like The Weeknd to be saying, and especially singing. I really did like when The Weeknd was doing his own thing, but when he would try to match Carti’s flow, it was hard to listen to. Another thing that made it hard to listen to was how long The Weeknd’s part was. The title of the song states “The Weeknd & Playboi Carti—Timeless,” not The “Weeknd, ft. Playboi Carti,” so we should’ve definitely gotten more Carti somewhere throughout the other half because The Weeknd’s part just felt so dragged out. Also, the beat isn’t anything too special production-wise, but it is indeed very catchy, and the vocal performance really complements it.
Other Opinions
Along with my own review, I interviewed some friends and other people to get their opinions on the song.
A few people who wanted to stay anonymous stated, “Carti carried,” “10/10,” “The Weeknd ruined it,” “Sounds like a Carti song with a forced The Weeknd feature; he has no business acting opium; he should stay a freak singer.”
Alex: “The second selection of the beat really compliments carti’s voice and helps him stand out, especially with his voice for the song. Carti is the star in the song, but The Weeknd also does a good job. Great song!”
Vashon: “The Weeknd carried; Playboi Carti did not sound great.”
David: “It really affected me in a good way mentally, by showing me that my dad, Playboi Carti, can show that there’s more to life than Mr. J. Combs.”
