At the start of almost every artist’s journey, mastering realism is one of their first goals. It is often over-emphasized when an artist is starting out, and it can frequently overshadow other unique art forms which can in turn make artists have an aversion to branching out creatively.
By itself, there is nothing inherently wrong with realism, as it’s only an art style. However, in my opinion, many people in the art community behave as if it is the only valid artform. At its best, realism allows for artists to make almost picture perfect works of art. Yes, it takes incredible skill and talent in order to come up with an incredibly detailed drawing of a person or of a thing, but it’s nothing special to me. Many other art styles not only draw a picture, but capture the subject in a unique way that is captivating to the viewer and therefore puts a new spin on whatever is being drawn.
I personally believe emphasis on realism in art is overrated, I find nothing special in a person copying a reference almost exactly. I would much rather see a stylized and unique portrait, showing off an artists individual talent or skill. People like to criticize other art styles outside of realism, but the existence of different and unique art styles is what makes art so interesting. If all art was the same, I’m certain that no one would want to go to art galleries or be interested in art in the first place.
In my own experience, while realism is great for understanding how to actually make a face, it works better when it is integrated with a stylized way of drawing. To me, it makes the process more fun and makes it more enjoyable to partake in. It is less taxing physically, and when I don’t draw in a realistic style I have less of an urge to chuck my drawing tablet at the wall!
