After watching the first Black Phone and seeing it end with a happy ending a second movie coming out never felt needed, until I actually went to watch it. There were so many plot twists that came from all angles answering questions I didn’t even know I needed answers to. I even feel like a third one could be made talking about the killer’s childhood and why he became the way he is.
For some background information I’m going to give a short summary of the first Black Phone movie. The movies are based on a small family of three: a father, a son, and a daughter (the mother, sadly, passed away). The main characters are the son, Finny, who gets bullied at school and the daughter, Gwen, who receives dreams from God that lets her know of upcoming danger and hints of something connecting to danger in her. In the town, multiple young boys have been reported missing and they are being kidnapped by this man named the Grabber. One of the boys being Finny’s best friend named Robin. The kidnapper also sadly killed all the young boys he kidnapped that’s why they were never found. Fast forward the Grabber manages to kidnap Finny and puts him in a basement with nothing in there but a black telephone that does not work. However as time passed the phone would ring and the voices of the previous dead boys would talk through the phone. This happened everyday until it got to the most recent which was Robin Finny’s best friend. This was the most emotional call for him but these actually teach Finny how to beat the Grabber since the previous kids already know all his tricks. Also with the help of his sister having dreams of the Grabber and his house she helped the police find Finny as soon as he finished defeating the Grabber.
Now for the second movie, we see Finny and his Sister as grown teenagers now. Somewhat moving on from their trauma. We even see Robin (Finny’s best friend) little brother who has a huge crush on Gwen. More into the movie we see Finny has picked up smoking as a coping mechanism and Gwen is having bad dreams again. This time the dreams cause her to sleep walk to whatever she is seeing and, in this case, it’s the basement where Finny was held captive. There she answered the ringing black phone and a girl picked up describing the same dreams Gwen was having. Gwen was soon woken up by Finny and taken back home. The next day, she decides she wants to go to this camp in the cold mountains. She’s been having dreams about it, especially since it’s the same one her mother went to as a little girl. After good convincing she goes with Robin’s little brother and Finny and, on the first night, hell already breaks loose. Ringing come from this random phone booth where the Grabber is on the phone telling Finny that he’s back for revenge since Finny is the reason he had to kill his brother who almost helped rescue Finny from the basement.
Gwen continues getting more dreams this time of the dead little boys that the Grabber first killed before reaching the recent boys and Finny. In these dreams, Gwen gets physically hurt from getting cut to being tossed and thrown in the air by the Grabber. After this, they all started putting clues together and figure out that the call Gwen answered in the basement while sleepwalking was her mom years ago from the camp when she had the same dream of the missing dead boys. Gwen then realized she shared this gift with her mom and found out her mom didn’t die from suicide but instead was killed by the Grabber while trying to figure out what happened to those missing little boys. Later they discover that, if they find the bodies of the missing boys, the Grabber will no longer have power over them. So, they make sure Gwen doesn’t fall asleep and get hurt in her dreams and begin looking for the bodies.
Fast forward a little bit and the Grabber is following and trying to sabotage them, but Gwen knows how to defeat him and goes to sleep cause she’s the only one that can see him. So, she sleepwalks and tricks the Grabber into falling and sinking under the icy lake with the bodies and finally defeating Grabber once and for all. Then, at the end of the movie we get a peaceful scene of the phone ringing, and the person calling was Gwen and Finny’s mom saying she’s safely in heaven and is extremely proud of them getting over this traumatic event in their life.
To conclude, my overall review and rating on this movie would be a 20 out of 10. I loved how it ended in a happily ever after and left no suspense or unanswered questions. I especially enjoyed how the bad guy was defeated after all the damage he caused. So, for those who enjoy a good thriller and movies that give great explanations to a bad guy’s craziness, I do recommend this movie.
