If you were to ask anyone how often they read, most would either say that they rarely read or that they don’t read at all. Although there are some people who do enjoy reading and do so on a regular basis, the sad reality of today is that most people, especially children and teens, don’t read as often as they should. Most teens would probably claim that reading is boring and that they only read when they have to, like for a school assignment. However, what many people might not realize is that reading actually has a lot of benefits.
For starters, reading helps with cognitive development. It activates various regions of the brain and helps enhance language skills and vocabulary. This is especially important when it comes to children. Reading to children increases their vocabulary and allows them to do better when it comes time for them to start school.
Reading on a regular basis also increases focus and concentration. Many say that they cannot focus long enough to finish even one chapter of a book, but, if they read for a few minutes every day, they will eventually train their brains to focus more on the words and tune out distractions. As a result, they will also gain better comprehension of what they’re reading.
To add on, the act of regular reading can and has helped many people alleviate stress. From personal experience, I can say that, when you immerse yourself in a really good book, you completely forget about all of the problems and struggles that you might be facing. Any burden that might be on your shoulders goes away when you choose to dive into a brand new world of your choosing. You can put yourself into the shoes of the main character and essentially live a brand new life for as long as you choose to read.
Despite knowing the benefits, some people still choose not to read. One of the most common reasons for this, could be that many people don’t know how to choose the right book. Although it might seem overwhelming, it’s not that difficult. Think about the different things that you enjoy. Whether it be sports, sci-fi, mystery, horror, or fantasy, there is a book for you. All you have to do is be willing to experiment and try new things until you find the right genre for you.
Whether it be physical, digital or an audiobook, books spark the imagination. They can transport you into a brand new world full of adventure, mystery and excitement. Through books, you can live a thousand lives and experience that which you have only ever dreamed of. So, don’t be scared to start reading more often, especially now that you know of some of the benefits.
