Why You Should Read

The importance of reading is not typically questioned because of extensive research, which has shown that reading is beneficial in many ways. Some people argue that reading is not as important in the lives of adults as it is in the lives of children. However, studies have shown that reading is important for both children and adults. Most people know that reading is important simply because it is drilled into their minds as a fact, but they may not understand that reading is not only important for exercising the brain. Here are some other reasons why you should read for pleasure.

1. Stress reduction                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        – Multiple studies have shown that reading reduces stress, eases tension, and slows down the heart rate. Reading is method for stress relief because it can take your mind off of whatever is stressing you out.

2. Reading can help you become a better writer                                                                                                                                                                                                – Reading is a method for helping you become a better writer because it can help expand your vocabulary. Reading also helps because you can see models of good writing by professionals who know what they’re doing. Reading also helps you with a major part of writing, understanding the language.

3. Better communication skills                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  -Reading makes you a better communicator by expanding your vocabulary and exposing you to new things. By understanding certain situations, it will help you communicate how you feel about the situations and come up with solutions to them. Communicating is an important skill when dealing with getting and keeping a job, as well as maintaining healthy relationships.

4. Exposure to different parts of the world/situations                                                                                                                                                                                                           -Reading helps expose people to different situations in different parts of the world because people often write about how other countries differ from their country. This is a good thing because people are informed of major issues that people globally have to live with. By spreading word of issues, it can raise awareness and overall it could lead to to a change in people’s lives. Exposure to different cultures can also eventually lead to a better understanding of why certain cultures have certain traditions.

5. Empathy booster                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          – Reading boosts empathy by exposing people to other situations. By exposing people to other situations, they can obtain a better understanding and can put themselves in other people’s shoes. Empathy is an important part of functioning in modern day society because it allows connections to be made. Having empathy will all together make you a more well-rounded person.
