Meet 10th grader Lyla Walk, a new student of Santaluces Community High School. When she’s not playing in the school band, Lyla is rocking out with the local band Last Minute and attending karate classes weekly. As she’s a new student at Santaluces High, I was curious to hear her perspective on campus life.
I asked Lyla about some of her favorite memories from this first quarter of the year. She eagerly responded with “I really enjoy our school’s band, and I love playing saxophone at our football games.” I am glad our campus is so inviting and welcomes all students with comfort and pride.
To gain some context, I asked Lyla where she had previously attended school, and how she has continued her studies at this institution. In response, Lyla told me she attended Somerset Academy Canyons, and continued saying, “I am enrolled in many AICE and AP courses to get college credits and hopefully obtain the AICE diploma!”
Outside of school, Lyla claims to play the drums for the band Last Minute, which plays shows in downtown Lake Worth. Playing multiple instruments takes hard work and discipline. Along with the band, Lyla is a karate student training to get her adult black belt in November. I asked Lyla how she practices the different instruments she plays and how she balances such a busy lifestyle. In response, Lyla told me it’s challenging to balance her busy schedule. However, following an itinerary throughout the day makes her more productive.
By speaking with Lyla, I got to share how I was also a new student last year. Coming to Santaluces during 11th grade was a scary but exciting experience that I haven’t regretted. I assured her that through community, clubs, and extracurricular activities, Lyla will be able to foster friendships.
Overall, Lyla is a hard working student who excels in musical talent along with academic achievement. Already, Lyla was able to make many friends and memories on campus.
